"We Are More Than the Sum of Our Parts" (18 x 26 x 13 in)

$0.00

After finishing the coloration and carving of the large butterfly on my table, I felt a strong pull to separate the being into two. After several minutes reflecting on the possibility of engaging an interchange between two separate beings, I decisively took my razor blade and cut through the textile and waxed layers as I held my breath. Continuing to explore the relationship between the two parts, I reflected on the power of collaboration and interrelationship with others.

Chosen by the jury for DIFFA/Chicago Art for Life for their live auction in support of AIDS and HIV research, I am honored to have this piece included in the exhibit. Especially during this time of COVID-19 and so much loss and stress, it feels wonderful to be able to contribute to research and support of another virus, that although is less often in the headlines, is no less a real and ongoing issue and one which is near and dear to my heart. The auction for this piece was held on Thursday evening, Oct. 24, 2020, and was sold to a client in Chicago— I express gratitude to the new collector and for the chance to be part of this vital organization.

This sculpture was created from macro photography printed onto textile and layered with wax, carved with relief, cut to shape and sculpted, before coming to rest on suspended branches suspended from the ceiling, creating dynamic shadows on the background wall .
